Elochukwu Amucheazi, President of the Igbo Leaders of Thought, has reiterated calls for restructuring Nigeria, describing it as the only path to resolving the country’s persistent crises.

Speaking to Vanguard, he argued that the 1963 constitutional framework offers a better model, warning that insecurity continues to worsen.

“I expected Israel and the United States to be sympathetic to us… Meanwhile, the Jihad continues in Nigeria,” he said, alleging a broader agenda behind ongoing violence.

Amucheazi criticised the federal government over poor electricity supply and rising fuel costs, noting that operational refineries could have reduced the impact of global tensions.

He also faulted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for failing to deliver on key promises.

On the political landscape, he rejected assumptions that the All Progressives Congress would automatically win the 2027 elections due to its dominance among state governors.

“Just because 31 states have governors from one party doesn’t mean everyone in those states belongs to that party,” he said.

Amucheazi pointed to growing international scrutiny over the detention of Nnamdi Kanu and heightened Biafra agitation.

He proposed a confederation structure that would grant regions greater autonomy.

“If we can achieve a confederation, we can continue as one country, but proper adjustments must be made,” he said.

He concluded that restructuring remains essential to addressing Nigeria’s economic, political, and security challenges.
