Nine EPL clubs still chasing European qualification ahead of final day showdown
The fight for European football in the Premier League will be decided on the final day, with nine clubs still mathematically in the race.
Nine Premier League clubs remain in contention for European qualification as the race for Champions League, Europa League and Conference League places heads into the final day of the season.
Although the Premier League title race and relegation battle have largely taken centre stage this campaign, the fight for continental football is also set for a dramatic conclusion on May 24.
Four European qualification spots are still available, with several clubs separated by only a few points.
Liverpool are currently leading the race for the fifth Champions League position after the Premier League earned an extra spot through UEFA’s European Performance Spots system.
Despite that advantage, Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Sunderland, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Everton and Fulham are all still mathematically capable of qualifying for Europe.
The battle became even tighter following recent league results.
Brighton missed an opportunity to improve their standing after suffering a late loss to Leeds United, while Brentford dropped points in a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.
Sunderland strengthened their chances with a 3-1 win over Everton to move above the Merseyside club in the table.
Newcastle United also stayed alive in the race after defeating West Ham 3-1.
Chelsea remain firmly in the mix ahead of their clash with Tottenham, while Fulham continue to hold only a slim mathematical hope of qualification.
Meanwhile, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa have already booked their places in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool currently occupy fifth position with 59 points but are yet to mathematically guarantee qualification.
Bournemouth still have a game in hand against Manchester City and could yet challenge for a Champions League place with a strong finish.
The Europa League and Conference League race is equally competitive, with Brighton sitting seventh and Brentford eighth in the standings.
Sunderland are only one point behind Brentford, while Chelsea, Newcastle United and Everton remain close enough to capitalise during the final round of matches.
With so many clubs separated by narrow margins, every result on the last day could prove decisive in determining who secures European football for next season.
