The Police Service Commission has approved the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and four other officers over their alleged role in the killing of Mene Ogidi, 28, in Effurun, Delta State.

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the action followed the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings and takes immediate effect.

He disclosed that the case has been referred to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for vetting and prosecution, assuring that the Police will cooperate fully.

“Following the incident, the Force ordered an immediate investigation by the Police Monitoring Unit,” he said. “Findings established that ASP Nuhu Usman and members of his team engaged in professional misconduct… culminating in the unlawful killing of Mr. Mene Ogidi.”

Placid emphasised that no matter the level of suspicion, extra-judicial actions are unacceptable and due process must be followed.

He also revealed that a driver and two vigilante members linked to the case are still at large, with security teams deployed to track them.

According to the Police, Ogidi received a parcel from Yenagoa and took it to a motor park in Effurun, where it was found to contain a locally made Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

The Force alleged that after he was apprehended by members of the public, ASP Usman shot him instead of handling the situation lawfully.

However, witnesses disputed parts of the Police account, stating that Ogidi brought the parcel for delivery and claimed it contained baby clothes before being forced to open it.

“We insisted he should open it because that is our practice… After it was opened and the gun discovered, he was tied and the police were called,” a park official said.

They further questioned the decision to use lethal force, noting that the suspect was still alive after being shot and taken away.

The body has been deposited in a mortuary, and an autopsy will form part of the prosecution process.

While some residents raised concerns over conflicting accounts, the Police have assured that investigations will continue and justice will be served.
