Motorists have called for the immediate removal of a broken-down heavy-duty truck obstructing the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway at 9th Mile Corner, warning that the vehicle has become a major hazard to travellers.

The truck reportedly developed a fault about five days ago but has since remained on the highway, allegedly obstructing traffic and contributing to multiple accidents.

The incident happened close to the location of the international motor parts market currently being constructed by the Enugu State Government.

Speaking with Vanguard on Wednesday evening, a motorist, Mr Uchenna Eze, said the truck had been responsible for several accidents around the area, with a number of people sustaining injuries.

He added that the obstruction had also worsened traffic congestion along the heavily travelled expressway.

Eze urged the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and the Enugu State Government to take immediate action to evacuate the truck and ease the movement of vehicles on the road.

“This is a very bad situation. The place where the truck broke down is very dangerous and it has been causing accidents.

“Today, being Wednesday, there were multiple accidents and a lot of people were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The FRSC mounts a road checkpoint close to here, and I don’t know why they have not enforced the removal of the truck from the expressway to allow free flow of traffic.

“They should urgently remove the truck to save the lives of travellers using this road,” he said.

As of the time of filing the report, efforts to get a response from the FRSC were unsuccessful.
