Ballon d’Or 2026: Yamal Leads Kane, Mbappe and Messi in Latest Rankings
Discover the top five contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with Barcelona star Lamine Yamal leading Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Rodri and Lionel Messi.
Lamine Yamal has emerged as the favourite to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, moving ahead of Harry Kane in the latest rankings ahead of the award ceremony scheduled for London on October 25.
According to The Independent, the Barcelona forward’s performances for club and country have strengthened his position in the race for football’s most prestigious individual honour.
Yamal’s contribution to Spain’s World Cup success, coupled with his impressive start to the new season, has reportedly given him the edge over Kane, who enjoyed a prolific campaign with Bayern Munich.
Ousmane Dembele, who won the previous edition of the award, is ranked sixth, while Manchester City forward Erling Haaland sits in eighth place.
Here are the five leading contenders in The Independent’s latest 2026 Ballon d’Or power rankings.
1. Lamine Yamal — Barcelona and Spain
Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal occupies the top position after an outstanding season that combined domestic success with international glory.
The 19-year-old reportedly scored 24 goals and provided 18 assists across competitions during the previous campaign, helping Barcelona win the LaLiga title.
He has carried that form into the new season, recording eight goals in his first eight appearances.
Yamal also played a key role in Spain’s World Cup triumph, further strengthening his credentials for the individual award.
One of his notable performances came against England at Wembley, where he scored in Spain’s 3-2 Nations League victory.
Having finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or race, Yamal is now considered the leading candidate to win the award for the first time.
2. Harry Kane — Bayern Munich and England
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane remains one of the strongest contenders despite dropping to second place in the latest rankings.
The England captain reportedly scored 61 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, helping Bayern Munich claim the league and cup double.
Kane also contributed six goals to England’s World Cup campaign, as the team achieved its best result at the tournament since lifting the trophy in 1966.
However, Yamal’s performances for Spain have reportedly strengthened the Barcelona forward’s chances of overtaking the Bayern striker in the final rankings.
Reacting to the uncertainty surrounding the award, Kane said: “Of course, now it is out of my hands, it is down to the voters and the people who decide it.”
He continued: “The season I had was my best season by far and we’ll have to wait and see.”
3. Kylian Mbappe — Real Madrid and France
Kylian Mbappe ranks third as the Real Madrid forward continues his quest for his first Ballon d’Or.
The French international reportedly scored 10 goals at the World Cup to finish as the tournament’s top scorer, surpassing previous scoring records associated with Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi.
At club level, Mbappe was credited with 42 goals in 44 appearances during the previous season.
His scoring form has continued into the new campaign, with eight goals in his first eight appearances under Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.
Despite Real Madrid ending the previous season without a major trophy, Mbappe’s individual achievements continue to make him a serious contender for the award.
4. Rodri — Barcelona and Spain
Spain midfielder Rodri is ranked fourth following his impressive performances during the country’s successful World Cup campaign.
The midfielder was named the tournament’s best player, having played a central role in controlling matches and helping Spain maintain a solid defensive record.
However, his chances of winning a second Ballon d’Or have been complicated by limited appearances for Barcelona following his recovery from injury.
The report indicated that Rodri had completed only two full matches out of seven appearances at the time of publication.
His international achievements could work in his favour, but his fitness, playing time and performances at Barcelona may ultimately determine whether he can climb higher in the rankings.
5. Lionel Messi — Inter Miami and Argentina
Lionel Messi rounds off the top five as the Argentine superstar continues to strengthen his legacy in world football.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner reportedly scored eight goals at the World Cup, helping Argentina reach the final before losing to Spain.
At 39, Messi remains a contender for the award despite Argentina’s failure to defend its world title.
His remarkable record in the competition, including his 2023 triumph after Argentina’s previous World Cup victory, further reinforces his credentials.
Former England captain David Beckham has also backed Messi to win the award following his contribution to Inter Miami’s Campeones Cup success.
Nevertheless, the latest rankings suggest that securing another Ballon d’Or could prove difficult without another World Cup title.
