Diaspora Nigerians Turn to Local Nigerian Brands to Beat High Overseas Costs

Nigerians living abroad are increasingly ordering clothes, shoes, bags, and other accessories from Nigeria to cut costs. Rising overseas prices and high living expenses are driving this shift in diaspora shopping habits.

Nigerians in diaspora

A popular Yoruba saying, “Oun a ni l’angbe l’aruge”, meaning “what one owns, he values,” now resonates with Nigerians abroad.

Previously, Nigerians in the diaspora, like those at home, favored foreign-made clothing and accessories, often sidelining local products. Today, however, the trend has reversed.

Economy & Lifestyle found that Nigerians living abroad are increasingly buying clothes, shoes, bags, and other items from Nigeria, shipping them to their overseas homes.

The main driver behind this change is the high cost of living abroad. Many Nigerians abroad are now seeking affordable ways to access goods from home without overspending.

Mrs. Chiwendu Osarodion shared her experience:
“I buy my food, clothing, bags, shoes, and accessories from Nigeria. It is cheaper than here. A single pair of jeans can cost £150, over N150,000, but I can buy three or four quality pairs in Nigeria for the same price. Ordering from Nigeria saves me a lot.”

Boutique owner Mrs. Helen Tudunola said:
“I have customers in the UK and US who order clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry from me. I help them ship to their destinations. When I got my first diaspora order, I was surprised because Nigerians usually cherish foreign brands and love showing them off.”

Mr. Goodnews Lawrence added:
“Shopping from Nigeria is far less expensive than abroad. Gone are the days of reckless spending overseas. I order my clothes, shoes, and perfumes from Nigeria. Only cold-weather items and some food I buy here. Many of my female friends also order African foodstuff from home.”

Mrs. Shade Okunloye described her logistics:
“I hire a trusted person in Nigeria to buy food, clothes, shoes, bags, and hair extensions. She ensures these items reach me safely using reliable logistics. This method is cheaper and more convenient than shopping abroad, which is so costly.”
