End of the Road for Slot as Liverpool Turn to Iraola After Disappointing Season

Arne Slot has left Liverpool after the club finished fifth in the Premier League, while Andoni Iraola is tipped to take over at Anfield.

Just over a year after delivering Premier League glory to Liverpool, manager Arne Slot has been shown the exit door following a turbulent season that fell far below expectations.

The club announced on Saturday that it had parted ways with the Dutch coach, citing the need for a “change of direction” after Liverpool slumped to fifth place despite spending a Premier League-record £450 million on new players.

Slot’s first season had been celebrated as a remarkable success. Taking over from legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, he guided Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th league title and earned widespread praise for handling one of football’s most demanding jobs.

But the momentum quickly faded.

Liverpool endured 19 defeats in all competitions and recorded their lowest Premier League points total in nearly a decade. Frustration among supporters grew as performances deteriorated and hopes of another title challenge evaporated.

Signs of unrest also emerged within the dressing room. Star forward Mohamed Salah sparked discussion earlier this month when he publicly called for a return to “heavy metal football,” a phrase closely associated with Klopp’s aggressive, attacking style.

The post received support from several teammates, fuelling speculation about dissatisfaction within the squad.

Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Group, had reportedly considered retaining Slot after the club secured Champions League qualification. However, growing pressure from supporters ultimately led to the decision to make a managerial change.

“The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction,” the club said.

Attention has now shifted to Andoni Iraola, who is widely expected to take charge after transforming Bournemouth into European qualifiers despite operating with significantly fewer resources than Liverpool.

The Spaniard also has an existing working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, a factor that could strengthen his candidacy.

Despite the disappointing end to his tenure, Slot leaves Anfield with a Premier League title to his name and the respect of many who believe he faced exceptional challenges, including the emotional impact of forward Diogo Jota’s fatal car accident during the summer.
