The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada, Abuja, with investigations underway to identify their mothers and other family members.

The two incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, several hours apart, according to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh.

The first incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. around Obodo Street, Kurudu, where a resident, identified as Innocent, heard the cry of a baby and discovered a baby boy wrapped in cloth inside a carton box.

Innocent promptly alerted the police, leading officers from the Kurudu Division, in collaboration with personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department, to rescue the child.

The baby boy was taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination and treatment, where he was reported to be in stable condition. He was later handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care.

In a separate incident later that night, at about 9:40 p.m., another resident, identified as Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate in Gwagwalada.

Ibrahim, assisted by other members of the community, rescued the baby girl and reported the incident to the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.

The baby girl was subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and care, pending further arrangements with the Social Welfare Department.

Adeh said the Command had commenced investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the two babies and trace their mothers or other relatives.

The police spokesperson commended the residents who discovered the children for their prompt intervention and cooperation with the authorities.
