The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned Nigerians against circulating a fake announcement on governorship candidates in six states ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commission, in a statement released on Monday through its official social media channels, said the purported announcement involving Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano states was fraudulent and should be disregarded.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” INEC declared in the notice.

It advised members of the public to confirm election-related reports through its authorised communication channels to avoid falling victim to misinformation.

According to the commission, Nigerians can access verified information through its website, inecnigeria.org, its official accounts on X and Instagram under the handle @inecnigeria, and its Facebook page, INEC Nigeria. The commission also identified inecnews.com as its official news portal.

The clarification follows INEC’s recent release of the final lists of candidates for the governorship elections slated for February 6, 2027.

Subsequent reports highlighted the absence of some expected candidates from the published lists, including PDP candidate Ladi Adebutu in Ogun State and Isa Pantami in Gombe State.

No reasons for the omissions were provided in the documents released by the commission.

With preparations for the 2027 elections underway, INEC urged Nigerians to exercise caution when encountering election-related announcements online and to rely on its verified platforms for information concerning candidates and electoral processes.
