Iran’s Pezeshkian Acknowledges ‘Many Problems’ as US Sanctions Intensify

Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian says the country is facing “many problems” as Trump’s administration imposes new sanctions targeting Iran’s economy.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has admitted that the country is grappling with serious challenges, saying the government is working to ease the difficulties facing citizens as Washington steps up economic pressure on Tehran.

“I understand we have many problems in society right now. We are trying to prevent these as much as we can,” Pezeshkian said on Sunday during a speech aired on Iranian state television.

The president’s comments followed a fresh US sanctions campaign announced last week, with Washington vowing to push for the “collapse” of the Iranian regime.

Pezeshkian blamed the heightened pressure on US President Donald Trump, saying Iran was effectively confronting Washington on several fronts.

“Thanks to Trump, we are in a full-scale economic, military and security war,” he said.

“He says he is imposing the most crushing and terrifying sanctions on Iran,” the Iranian president added.

The latest economic pressure comes as Iran continues to deal with the effects of inflation, currency fluctuations and declining purchasing power.

Economic hardship has previously fuelled waves of protests across the country. At the end of December last year, demonstrations initially driven by the rising cost of living developed into wider protests targeting Iran’s leadership.

Iranian authorities said more than 3,000 people were killed during the unrest and accused the United States and Israel of orchestrating the violence.

Foreign-based NGOs, meanwhile, alleged that authorities responded with an indiscriminate crackdown that left thousands dead.

Against this backdrop, Pezeshkian said his administration was determined to tackle the country’s economic and social challenges.

“We are striving with all our hearts to overcome inflation, livelihood problems, unemployment, and to secure the future of the people, so that they can live with dignity and pride,” he said.
