Abuja Flood: Asokoro, Maitama, Guzape Under Water as Residents Count Losses

Abuja residents are counting their losses after unprecedented flooding hit Asokoro, Maitama and Guzape, prompting Wike to order demolitions on waterways.

Residents of Abuja’s highbrow neighbourhoods have been left shaken after an unusually heavy downpour turned parts of the capital into flood zones, sweeping through Asokoro, Maitama, Guzape, Katampe, Lokogoma, Garki and Wuse.

The rainfall began mildly but intensified dramatically by 10pm on Tuesday, producing what residents described as the worst flooding they had witnessed in recent history.

The flood caught many residents off guard.

In Asokoro, Umar Abdullahi was asleep when his daughter screamed, “Mummy, water is coming in.” Within minutes, floodwater had overtaken the compound and begun pushing through the doors.

Elsewhere, a government official’s SUV became trapped after the driver attempted to drive through what appeared to be a shallow pool of water.

For longtime residents, the scale of the flooding was difficult to comprehend.

Nasir Tanko, who has lived in Abuja for more than a decade, said: “This is the first time since I came to Abuja over a decade ago that I’m experiencing this.”

Mr Emmanuel Okoro, an Asokoro resident, was equally stunned.

“14 years,” he said, pointing to the flood mark on his wall, “water has never come this high.”

The water eventually entered his boys’ quarters, destroying property and forcing his family to spend the night moving belongings to higher places.

In Maitama, Zainab described the aftermath as devastating.

“I looked down and saw the kitchen under water. The fridge had fallen. The smell the next day… mud, diesel, sewage. You can’t wash that out in one day,” she said.

Her househelp, Amina, lost her room, mattress and clothes, lamenting: “Aunty, my salary is in that bag.”

Guzape Residents Count the Cost

Guzape, where extensive construction has transformed the hillsides with luxury homes and estates, suffered significant damage.

Tunde, a site engineer, said floodwater poured into his site from three directions.

“Water was coming from three places,” he said. “From the hill behind us, from the road they are still doing, and from the next estate. We did sandbags. The water just pushed them.”

He lost construction materials worth more than N2 million.

The flooding has intensified debate over Abuja’s urban planning and drainage infrastructure.

NiMet data showed that more than 90mm of rainfall fell in less than four hours. Engineers and planners also pointed to outdated and silted drainage systems, rapid construction and the alteration of natural waterways as contributing factors.

An unnamed contractor warned: “When you build on a water path, water will find another path. Sometimes that path is through your parlour.”

Wike Moves Against Structures on Waterways

Following the disaster, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike visited affected areas and ordered the demolition of structures standing on water channels, regardless of ownership.

Demolition operations subsequently began in parts of Maitama, with homes, fences and businesses pulled down. Some affected property owners complained that the exercise was carried out without sufficient notice.

The FCT Administration has also banned the conversion of Abuja’s green spaces, parks and gardens into commercial car dealership lots.

A dedicated task force has been created to monitor affected areas and enforce the clearance of illegal car lots, while an administrative investigation has been opened into officials suspected of approving commercial activities on protected spaces.

But residents say enforcement alone will not solve the problem.

“We need bigger drains. We need maintenance every year, not once in five years,” said Mrs Dogo, a Maitama resident.

The flood has also changed how residents view rainfall. People who once worried mainly about traffic when dark clouds gathered are now moving documents and valuables upstairs and parking their vehicles on higher ground.

As one resident put it: “Government should tell us the truth. If this place can flood again, let us know. We can’t be living in fear every time it rains.”

For Abuja, the question now is whether the unprecedented flooding was a one-off disaster—or a warning of what could happen again if the capital’s drainage and planning problems remain unresolved.
