Canada has issued a fresh warning to people seeking to travel, study, work or relocate to the country, urging visa applicants to be alert to fraudsters posing as immigration officials, agents and recruiters.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has identified four red flags that could indicate a visa scam, particularly as fraudsters increasingly target prospective immigrants with fake documents, false promises and demands for personal or financial information.

Beware of Fake IRCC Officials on Social Media

One warning sign is receiving unsolicited messages on social media from someone claiming to work for IRCC and asking for personal information.

Fraudsters can create fake profiles or impersonate Canadian immigration officials in an attempt to obtain applicants’ sensitive documents and other details.

Applicants are therefore advised to establish the identity of anyone claiming to represent the Canadian government before sharing information.

No One Can Guarantee a Canadian Visa

Applicants should also be suspicious of agents who demand cash payments, fail to provide receipts and promise guaranteed visa approval.

No legitimate immigration representative can guarantee the issuance of a Canadian visa or permanent residence.

Claims that an agent has special access to Canadian immigration officials or can secure approval in return for money should be treated as a major warning sign.

Be Careful With Unofficial Payment Requests

IRCC has further warned applicants about requests to pay visa or immigration fees through email, telephone calls or bank transfers.

Unexpected requests to transfer money through unofficial channels should raise concerns.

Applicants should use the established Canadian government payment process and be wary of anyone asking them to make payments outside the official system.

Check Work and Employment Documents Carefully

People seeking Canadian work permits have also been advised to scrutinise documents supplied by recruiters.

Documents containing numerous spelling, grammatical or other errors could indicate that an employment offer or immigration document is fraudulent.

Job seekers should verify the authenticity of job offers and related immigration documents before paying money or submitting an application.

IRCC urged applicants to remain vigilant throughout the immigration process and protect themselves against fraud.

For anyone considering a Canadian visa, the key advice is to rely on official government information, question unsolicited approaches, reject unrealistic promises and avoid sharing personal or financial information with unverified individuals or organisations.
