Nigeria’s 1914 Amalgamation Has Failed, Divide Country Into Six Republics — BIM-MASSOB Tells UN
Ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly, BIM-MASSOB says Nigeria’s 1914 amalgamation has failed and urges the UN to grant independence to the country’s six geopolitical zones.
The Biafra Independence Movement and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) have urged the United Nations to support the creation of six independent republics from Nigeria, saying the country’s 1914 amalgamation has failed.
In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mazi Chris Mocha, the group said the upcoming 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled for September 14 to 28, 2026, offers an opportunity for the international community to consider its proposal.
BIM-MASSOB argued that the union of Northern and Southern Nigeria has not delivered national unity or sustainable development since its creation, adding that the centenary of the amalgamation in 2014 highlighted what it described as the shortcomings of the arrangement.
The organisation blamed Nigeria’s current security challenges and underdevelopment on the country’s existing political structure.
Calling for a new approach, the group asked the United Nations to grant independence to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
“For the United Nations, if you are truly working for world peace, there is only one solution to the problems of Nigeria: the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria should be granted independence as the only way to disarm the terrorists in the country,” BIM-MASSOB stated.
The group, which advocates for the actualisation of a Biafra state under the leadership of Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, said international law would protect the rights, assets and interests of citizens in the South-East, South-West, South-South, North-Central, North-East and North-West if the proposal is implemented.
It also suggested that bilateral agreements could serve as the framework for future cooperation among the proposed republics.
BIM-MASSOB further appealed to political leaders in Abuja to consider what it described as the aspirations of Nigerians and seek lasting solutions to the country’s enduring challenges.
According to the organisation, its advocacy continues to focus on the peaceful pursuit of self-determination.
