Ejiofor: 27 Coffins Expose Nigeria’s Worsening Security Crisis

Legal practitioner and social commentator Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor has said the recent mass burial of 27 victims is a sobering reminder of Nigeria’s inability to halt recurring mass killings, calling for urgent action to address the country’s worsening insecurity.

In a statement entitled, “The Escalating Tide of Genocidal Atrocities: Mass Burial of 27 Victims of Jihadist Terror as Nigeria’s Conscience Stands Trial,” Ejiofor said the image of the 27 coffins reflects the heavy human toll of persistent violence across Nigeria.

He argued that the deaths of innocent citizens should trigger sustained national action instead of temporary expressions of grief.

Warning against complacency, Ejiofor said repeated attacks risk becoming normalised if society fails to hold perpetrators accountable.

“History teaches that every genocide begins with the normalization of repeated atrocities and the collective silence that follows them. Nigeria must resist travelling that perilous path,” he stated.

He said the ongoing killings, regardless of whether they are classified as terrorism, insurgency or criminality, demonstrate the urgent need for stronger security measures.

Ejiofor also lamented that national attention appeared to be shifting towards political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections while insecurity continued to claim lives.

Commenting on criticisms surrounding the recent visit of Catholic bishops to the Presidency, he said religious leaders have a legitimate responsibility to speak on issues affecting the nation and should not be intimidated for doing so.

According to him, faith-based institutions have long served as moral voices in society.

“A government genuinely committed to solving national problems should welcome sincere criticism, particularly from respected institutions whose only interest is the preservation of human dignity and national stability,” he said.

He called on the Federal Government to place security at the top of its agenda by fully deploying available intelligence, resources and constitutional powers to curb violent attacks.

Ejiofor insisted that Nigerians deserve concrete security measures rather than repeated condolences after every tragedy.

Recalling the recent burial organised by the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, he said the ceremony reflected the devastating consequences of attacks on local communities.

He noted that reports indicated armed assailants attacked Naridan, a farming community located on the border between Kaduna State and Ganawuri in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, at about 11 p.m. on a Sunday, killing several residents, razing homes and forcing others to flee.

He urged both government and citizens to work together to restore peace and ensure communities across the country are adequately protected.
