Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have begun a 72-hour boycott of lectures over what they described as persistent transportation problems within the campus.

The protest comes as newly introduced buses and tricycles—donated by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu—begin operations on campus.

University spokesperson Abiodun Olarewaju had earlier urged the Students’ Union to give management time to resolve challenges linked to the rollout of 50 buses and 30 tricycles.

However, in a statement signed by President Adelani David and Secretary Habeeb Oke, the union ordered a suspension of lectures from Monday to Thursday, April 16, 2026, following a one-week observation and a joint leadership meeting of student bodies.

The union said the current system has caused “inadequate coverage of the campus, persistent shortage of operational tricycles and buses, overcrowding and discomfort, and insufficient drivers.”

It demanded urgent improvements, including more vehicles, reinstatement of the previous transport arrangement until issues are fixed, and proper consultation with student leaders before further changes.

“Provision of more vehicles to cater for the over 35,000 members of the University community… Full consultation with the Students’ Union leadership,” the statement read.

The union added that it will review the situation after the 72-hour boycott and may escalate to a mass protest if its demands are not addressed.
