Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, on Sunday met with former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano, in a move that has sparked talks of political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

The meeting, held at Kwankwaso’s residence, was attended by key figures including Seyi Makinde, Seriake Dickson, and activist Naajatu Mohammed.

Observers say the gathering has raised speculation about Kwankwaso’s possible defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the African Democratic Congress.

Addressing supporters during the Kwankwassiya Sallah festival, Obi maintained that the visit was primarily for the celebration but stressed his commitment to Kano’s economic revival.

“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of Sallah and to pay my respect to our leader. So thank you,” he said.

“We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano… bring back the power of Kano—all those factories in Bompai, Sharada 1, Sharada 2, Bank of the North—we want to bring all of them back. Today is not politics; it is the celebration of Sallah.”

The visit highlights ongoing efforts by Obi and his allies to deepen engagement in the North while promoting economic development and strengthening political alliances.

Kwankwaso welcomed the delegation, expressing satisfaction at the unity and goodwill displayed during the Sallah gathering.
