Premier League: Arsenal and Chelsea Put Perfect Starts on the Line as Spurs Fight for Survival

The Premier League serves up a major early-season clash this weekend as unbeaten Arsenal welcome Chelsea to the Emirates, with both sides aiming to maintain their 100 percent league records.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and newly promoted Hull have all won their opening two matches, setting up an intriguing battle at the top of the table.

At the other end, Tottenham Hotspur are struggling at the foot of the standings and will travel to Nottingham Forest hoping to kick-start their season. Liverpool are also searching for their first victory under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Here are three major storylines ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

Arsenal’s resilience faces Chelsea’s firepower

Arsenal have wasted little time showing why they remain among the leading contenders for another Premier League title.

The champions followed their 3-0 win over Coventry with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph at Aston Villa last weekend. The result also marked their sixth clean sheet in seven league matches, underlining the defensive solidity Mikel Arteta has built into his side.

Bukayo Saka has provided another positive for Arteta, with the England winger already finding the net twice after a disrupted 2025/26 season caused by injuries.

Chelsea have enjoyed an equally encouraging start under new boss Xabi Alonso, winning three matches across all competitions.

The Blues have been particularly impressive in attack, with Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers accounting for five of their seven league goals in victories over Fulham and Brighton.

Defensively, however, Chelsea have looked less convincing, conceding five times in their first two league outings.

Alonso will therefore be eager to find greater defensive stability when his side take on Arsenal on Sunday.

Chelsea will also have history to overcome, having failed to beat Arsenal in their last nine Premier League meetings.

Spurs face another crucial test

Tottenham’s difficult start has placed immediate pressure on Roberto De Zerbi, although the manager insists his team can turn things around.

Spurs suffered a 3-0 defeat against Brentford on the opening weekend before Newcastle inflicted another setback with a 2-0 victory.

Those results leave Tottenham bottom of the table after the club had already endured consecutive 17th-place finishes in the previous two campaigns.

The London club invested more than £350 million ($473 million) during the summer in an effort to transform the squad, bringing in notable names such as Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Savio.

But the early performances have offered little encouragement ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Nottingham Forest, who defeated Tottenham twice last season.

De Zerbi, who arrived in late March, remains convinced that his side will avoid another relegation fight.

“After two defeats, maybe somebody can think it’s the same story, the same as the last two seasons,” he said.

“I have no doubt it’s not like this. I think I can’t change my opinion after two defeats. I have a big, big confidence in the qualities of my players.”

Barcola arrival gives Liverpool fresh hope

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola will be hoping his side can finally secure a win after consecutive draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

France forward Bradley Barcola could make his Liverpool debut at Ipswich on Friday, following his move from Paris Saint-Germain for a deal worth up to £124 million.

His arrival further strengthens an already expensive Liverpool forward line featuring Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and the injured Hugo Ekitike.

However, Liverpool have conceded four goals in two matches, raising questions about the balance of the team.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the squad still needs strengthening in key areas.

“It does not look like a balanced squad,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “Liverpool are short in the full-back areas and probably a midfield player as well.”

Iraola, however, was pleased to see the transfer window close, allowing him to focus entirely on his squad.

“Once the market is closed, we know who we are,” he said on Thursday. “I think we have a lot of talent in this group of players.

“Now we have to perform, we have to do our job and we have to start from tomorrow.”
