Rarara Vs Davido: The Controversy That Divided Nigeria -By Amina Muhammad Modu
The disagreement quickly sparked reactions across social media, with Nigerians divided between those who viewed Davido’s action as responsible advocacy and those who agreed with Rarara’s concerns about national image. The controversy ultimately highlighted the ongoing debate over how public figures should respond to national crises.
In June 2026, a jacket worn by Afrobeats star Davido at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles sparked a nationwide debate on insecurity, patriotism, and the role of celebrities in social advocacy.
During his performance on June 10, Davido appeared in a customized black jacket bearing the names of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Across the jacket was the message: “Bring Them Home.” The gesture was intended to draw international attention to the victims, who had been kidnapped weeks earlier by armed attackers.
The abduction, which occurred in May 2026 in the Ahoro-Esinele community of Oriire LGA, left families in distress and renewed concerns over Nigeria’s security challenges. As calls for action intensified, Davido used his global platform to highlight the victims’ plight.
Many Nigerians praised the singer for using his influence to amplify the voices of affected families. Supporters described the act as compassionate and a reminder that celebrities can play a role in humanitarian advocacy.
However, the gesture also attracted criticism from popular Hausa singer and political commentator Dauda Kahutu Rarara. In a video that circulated widely online, Rarara argued that showcasing Nigeria’s security problems before an international audience portrayed the country negatively.
According to him, sensitive security matters should be handled carefully, especially while efforts to rescue victims are ongoing. He maintained that publicizing such incidents on a global stage could damage Nigeria’s image and potentially complicate rescue operations.
