Rising Tensions Threaten Iran Ceasefire as Global Leaders Urge Talks

Iran faces mounting global pressure after renewed attacks threaten a ceasefire and disrupt key oil routes in the Strait of Hormuz.

A fragile ceasefire involving Iran edged closer to collapse on Tuesday as world leaders called on Tehran to recommit to diplomacy amid escalating regional violence.

Tensions surged after Iran and the United States exchanged fire near the Strait of Hormuz, while the UAE reported fresh Iranian attacks despite the truce.

Efforts to revive diplomacy have faltered, with Washington cancelling two planned meetings with Iranian officials in Pakistan.

Tehran has vowed to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil route, rejecting external pressure following US and Israeli strikes earlier this year.

German leader Friedrich Merz called on Iran to “return to the negotiating table and stop holding the region and the world hostage.” His stance was echoed by Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer, while Saudi Arabia urged renewed diplomatic engagement.

The US military claimed it destroyed six Iranian vessels, but Iran dismissed the report and accused US forces of killing civilians.

The UAE condemned Iranian missile and drone strikes as “a dangerous escalation and an unacceptable transgression,” confirming injuries and attempted attacks on energy infrastructure.

Iran maintained the incidents were not deliberate attacks, with an official blaming US “adventurism” in the region. “The US military must be held accountable,” the official said.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that “there is no military solution to a political crisis,” cautioning against further escalation.

Donald Trump has pushed for reopening the strait, announcing “Project Freedom” to assist ships, though its implementation remains uncertain.

Markets reacted swiftly, with oil prices rising sharply. At the same time, ongoing clashes in Lebanon between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have added to regional instability, raising fears of a broader conflict.
