The first round of matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has already delivered a series of historic achievements, with players and nations setting new benchmarks in the tournament’s expanded format.

From Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the first players to appear in six World Cups to Kylian Mbappe rewriting France’s scoring records and Cape Verde’s Vozinha producing a historic performance, Round 1 provided several moments that will be remembered for years.

Historic Expansion to 48 Teams

The 2026 tournament is the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 nations, making it the biggest edition in football history.

The competition includes a record 104 matches and welcomes four debutants — Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan.

Messi and Ronaldo Break Appearance Record

Messi and Ronaldo both reached six World Cup appearances during their countries’ opening matches.

The achievement established a new all-time record, eclipsing the previous mark of five tournaments set by German legend Lothar Matthäus.

Mbappe Reaches New France Milestone

Mbappe scored twice in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal to become France’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Harry Kane’s two-goal performance against Croatia helped England secure a 4-2 victory and drew him level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals.

Vozinha Creates Multiple World Cup Records

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha became one of the oldest players to make history at a World Cup.

At 40 years and 12 days old, he became the oldest footballer to feature in a country’s debut World Cup match and the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his World Cup debut.

His seven saves against Spain secured Cape Verde’s first World Cup point and earned him Player of the Match honours.

McGinn Becomes Scotland’s Oldest World Cup Goalscorer

John McGinn entered the record books by scoring against Haiti at the age of 31 years and 238 days.

The goal made him Scotland’s oldest scorer in World Cup history, surpassing Kenny Dalglish.

Canada End Long Wait for First Point

Canada secured a historic first World Cup point after drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The result ended a run of six consecutive World Cup defeats stretching across the 1986 and 2022 editions.

Qatar Register First World Cup Point

Qatar also reached a milestone by earning a 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

The result marked the nation’s first point in World Cup competition.
