Three security operatives were killed late Monday after suspected gunmen attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, in what appeared to be an attempt to breach the nation’s top policy and strategic studies institution.

The attackers reportedly stormed the facility around 11:40 p.m., opening fire and triggering a fierce gunfight with security personnel guarding the institute.

A staff member who spoke anonymously said the attack caught security personnel by surprise but was met with a strong response aimed at preventing the assailants from entering the facility.

According to the source, two soldiers and one police officer attached to the institute’s security detail lost their lives during the confrontation. The source added that the rapid response by security forces prevented the attackers from advancing further into the institution.

Authorities had yet to determine the motive behind the assault at the time of reporting.

Residents of nearby communities were alarmed by the incident. Bulus Haruna, a resident of Kuru in Jos South Local Government Area, said prolonged gunfire sent panic through surrounding neighbourhoods.

NIPSS later confirmed the attack, stating that the situation had been successfully contained and that operations at the institute remained unaffected.

In a statement signed by Dr. Osime Samuel, Head of the Public Affairs Department, the institute said security personnel and relevant agencies acted swiftly to restore order.

“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.

“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement said.

The institute further disclosed that security agencies had launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and warned against drawing conclusions while inquiries were ongoing.

“Security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. As investigations are ongoing, it would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope or outcome of the event.

“The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms,” the statement added.

NIPSS said it would continue to work closely with security authorities and provide verified updates as investigations progress. The institute also praised the professionalism and dedication displayed by security personnel during the response to the attack.
