‘Tinubu Walks to Office, Eats Once a Day’ — NRS Chairman
Zacch Adedeji defends President Tinubu’s lifestyle, saying he walks to his office, eats once a day and remains focused on official duties.
The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu enjoys an extravagant lifestyle, saying the President’s daily routine does not reflect excessive spending.
Adedeji spoke during an interview with Channels Television on Sunday in response to questions about the lifestyles of political leaders amid economic hardship and growing scrutiny of government expenditure.
The NRS boss said Tinubu frequently walks from his residence to his office rather than using a vehicle, except when travelling to the airport.
He further claimed that the President eats once daily and had not travelled outside Nigeria in the previous three months.
“Mr President goes from home to office on foot, not even driving except when he is going to the airport. I don’t know where you see the convoy. Before he became president, what is he riding?” Adedeji said.
The NRS chairman was subsequently asked about reports of luxury vehicles, including Escalades, allegedly forming part of the presidential convoy.
Adedeji defended the President’s access to such vehicles, arguing that the cost of an Escalade should not be considered excessive for the Nigerian presidency.
“How much is an Escalade that the president of Nigeria cannot afford? Please don’t embarrass this country,” he said.
Adedeji: Tinubu focused on work
The NRS chairman maintained that Tinubu had not been living large, pointing instead to the President’s work schedule and limited travel.
“What is living large? In the last months, he has not even left the shores of this country, trekking and working. If you go there now, you will see him review one document or the other,” Adedeji said.
He also challenged critics to point to evidence of the President frequently attending social gatherings or going on holidays.
“So what is living large? The president eats once in a day. How many parties have you seen him at in the last three years? Tell me where you have seen him, whether on holiday or anywhere?” he added.
Adedeji’s remarks followed questions about whether the lifestyles of political office holders are appropriate at a time when Nigerians are facing significant economic challenges.
