Nigeria’s Super Falcons will have to take the longer route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after Cameroon defeated them 1-0 in their WAFCON 2026 quarter-final clash.

Nyadjou’s 19th-minute strike was enough to separate the two sides and send Cameroon through, while Nigeria were left to rue their missed chances.

The Super Falcons created a number of opportunities in search of an equaliser, but Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced an outstanding display between the posts.

Bihina made eight saves during the encounter, repeatedly denying Nigeria as the Falcons attempted to get back into the contest.

Despite their attacking efforts, Nigeria could not breach the Cameroonian defence before the final whistle, with Nyadjou’s early goal proving decisive.

The result also ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the WAFCON qualification route.

Only the four teams that progress to the semi-finals of the African championship will earn direct qualification for the tournament in Brazil.

Nigeria, having exited at the quarter-final stage, will now compete in the African play-offs alongside the other three defeated quarter-finalists.

The winner of that play-off will earn the opportunity to advance to the inter-confederation play-offs, where another route to the 2027 World Cup will be available.

Therefore, the Super Falcons are not yet out of contention for the World Cup, but their defeat to Cameroon means they now face a significantly tougher road to Brazil.
