Trump Suspends ‘Project Freedom’ in Hormuz Amid Hopes of Iran Peace Deal

US President Donald Trump has temporarily halted a military initiative to escort commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing encouraging signs of a possible agreement to end the two-month conflict with Iran.

The operation, dubbed “Project Freedom,” was paused just 24 hours after its launch following mediation efforts led by Pakistan and other countries.

“Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement,” Trump said, adding: “Project Freedom… will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed.”

While the escort mission is suspended, the US blockade on Iranian ports remains active, as Iran continues to enforce its own restrictions on the critical trade route.

More than 22,000 seafarers and roughly 1,500 ships remain stranded, awaiting safe passage through the strait.

Pakistan’s leader, Shehbaz Sharif, said he was optimistic that diplomatic efforts could produce a “lasting agreement.”

At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks in Beijing with China’s Wang Yi, stressing that Tehran would only accept a “fair and comprehensive agreement.”

Wang, in response, called for both sides to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as possible.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also appealed to China to intervene, warning that Iran’s actions in the strait risk global isolation.

The pause eased market concerns, with global oil prices dropping sharply.

Despite the diplomatic progress, hostilities persist. Iran reportedly carried out missile and drone strikes against US forces, while the US said it destroyed several Iranian vessels it claimed posed a threat to shipping.

A container ship belonging to CMA CGM was also reportedly attacked in the waterway.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth maintained that the US is “not looking for a fight,” but warned of a “devastating response” to any further escalation.

Israel has also heightened its military readiness, with officials stating the country remains “on high alert across all fronts.”
