UN Raises Alarm as Iran Executes 21, Detains 4,000 Amid War Crackdown

The United Nations has reported that Iran has executed at least 21 people and detained more than 4,000 since the Middle East conflict began earlier this year.

According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the executions include nine individuals linked to January 2026 protests, 10 accused of belonging to opposition groups, and two charged with spying.

Thousands more have been arrested on national security-related grounds, with the UN alleging widespread abuses, including enforced disappearances, torture, forced confessions, and mock executions.

“I am appalled… the rights of the Iranian people continue to be stripped from them by the authorities, in harsh and brutal ways,” said UN rights chief Volker Türk.

He warned that even during conflict, restrictions on rights must remain proportionate and necessary, urging Iran to end executions and uphold due process.

The OHCHR said Iran’s legal framework places many people — including minors — at risk of capital punishment due to vague national security laws and expedited trials, often based on questionable evidence.

It also expressed concern over detainees being transferred to unknown locations, including high-profile lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh.

The UN further described prison conditions as “dire,” citing overcrowding and severe shortages of essential supplies and medical care.

In Chabahar prison, security forces reportedly used lethal force against protesting inmates, killing at least five and injuring 21.

Additionally, the UN said Iran has imposed a near-total internet blackout lasting 61 days, one of the longest globally, cutting off access to information and worsening economic and social conditions.

“This is denying people… access to vital information, silencing independent voices… and must be lifted immediately,” Türk said.
