Uncertain Future Awaits Neymar as Brazil Star Returns to Santos
Brazil star Neymar is back at Santos, but his future remains uncertain with his contract nearing expiry after an injury-hit season and Brazil’s World Cup disappointment.
Neymar has resumed duties with Santos amid growing uncertainty over his future, with just months remaining on his contract and lingering questions following Brazil’s early exit from the FIFA World Cup.
The Brazilian forward returned to his childhood club in January 2025 after ending his spell with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. His deal with Santos is due to expire in December.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain attacker endured another injury-hit campaign after knee surgery late last year, limiting him to just eight appearances in Santos’ 19 Brasileirao matches this season.
Even so, Neymar registered four goals and two assists, demonstrating glimpses of the quality that made him one of the world’s most celebrated footballers.
His future at Santos, however, remains uncertain.
According to a source within the club, any contract renewal is expected to depend on the outcome of Santos’ presidential elections in December.
Current president Marcelo Teixeira, who facilitated Neymar’s return, has not indicated whether he will contest another term.
Neymar also endured a difficult FIFA World Cup campaign after returning to Brazil’s national team nearly three years after his previous appearance.
He played only 37 minutes across two matches and scored a penalty, but Brazil suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16.
Following the elimination, the forward hinted that his international career could be over.
“It ends here,” Neymar said after the defeat before leaving the pitch in tears.
As debate over his future intensified, an AI-generated fan video circulated online showing a young Neymar encouraging his older self to lead Brazil to a sixth World Cup title in 2030.
The striker responded to the video with three laughing-and-crying emojis.
His father and agent, Neymar Santos Sr., has since appealed to him to continue playing.
“Son, keep playing football. Feel the joy of having the ball at your feet again; smile on the pitch again,” he wrote in an Instagram video.
“Don’t be afraid of tomorrow.”
Reports have suggested Neymar is exploring a move to Major League Soccer, although discussions with FC Cincinnati reportedly failed to result in a transfer.
The American league currently boasts several experienced international stars, including Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Thomas Müller.
