Understanding Leadership through Babagana Umara Zulum: A Humanitarian Leader in Action, by Fatima Muritala

In my years of experience as a communication specialist, I have witnessed & reported on different leadership styles, but there are few that truly embody what it means to lead with both head and heart. One such leader is Babagana Umara Zulum, the Governor of Borno State.

Governor Zulum has proven that leadership is more than just decision-making from the comfort of an office. It’s about taking responsibility, stepping up, and sometimes, putting your own life at risk to protect others. His recent involvement in rescuing survivors from the devastating floods in Borno State is not an isolated incident; it’s part of a long-standing pattern of selflessness, compassion, and hands-on leadership.

As we all know, leadership requires managing resources, navigating cultural diversity, motivating teams, and, most importantly, having the courage to be present in times of crisis. Governor Zulum exemplifies this by being on the frontlines whenever his people are in need, whether it’s due to insecurity, poverty, or natural disasters like this current flood.

He is more than just a leader; he is a man who understands the pains, hopes, and aspirations of his people. He cries with them in sorrow, celebrates with them in joy, and stands with them in adversity. His ability to empathize and act quickly in times of disaster speaks volumes about his character and leadership style.

Governor Zulum’s administration has built a culture of accountability, transparency, and teamwork. His leadership is like a well-coordinated army; ready for any challenge and dedicated to achieving success for the good of Borno’s people. The governor doesn’t just give orders; he mentors, guides, and creates a system where everyone’s voice matters.

To me, this is what real leadership looks like. It’s not just about wielding power; it’s about fulfilling the obligations that come with it; protecting, empowering, and improving the lives of those you serve. And Governor Zulum has not fallen short of this.

Leadership with empathy is the future, and if there’s one thing we can all take away from Governor Zulum’s actions, it’s the power of leading with humanity at the forefront.

Let this serve as a reminder that leadership is more than authority; it’s a responsibility to act, to care, and to serve.
