The battle for Nigeria’s governorship seats in 2027 has entered a decisive phase as political parties unveil candidates across the 28 states scheduled to hold elections.

From Kaduna to Lagos, Kano to Enugu, governors seeking second terms and outgoing state leaders attempting to install successors are confronting fierce opposition amid a wave of defections, fractured alliances and changing political calculations.

While seven states with off-cycle elections will not participate, the contests elsewhere are already exposing deep divisions within the country’s political landscape. Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara stands out as the only first-term governor who failed to secure a re-election ticket.

North Braces for High-Stakes Political Battles

The contest for power in the North is expected to be driven by a combination of incumbency, security concerns, zoning arrangements and the enduring influence of political kingmakers.

In Kaduna, Governor Uba Sani faces a formidable challenge from PDP candidate Shehu Usman Bawa and ADC’s Isa Ashiru. The breakdown of the once-powerful alliance between Sani and former governor Nasir El-Rufai has become one of the state’s defining political stories.

Kano’s Governor Abba Yusuf is also preparing for a difficult re-election campaign following his split from Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement. Political observers believe the movement’s support for an alternative candidate could significantly reshape the race.

Benue, Taraba and Adamawa remain among the most unpredictable contests. In Adamawa particularly, many analysts see former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a key political factor whose influence could affect the final outcome.

Meanwhile, APC strongholds such as Borno and Yobe appear largely secure, with outgoing governors successfully positioning preferred successors as party candidates.

Southern States Witness Intense Succession Struggles

In the South, succession politics is dominating several key races.

Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat emerged as the APC candidate in a process widely viewed as uncontested. However, ADC candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour is expected to lead the opposition challenge after building a strong support base during the last election cycle.

In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde may not be on the ballot, but his political influence continues to shape the contest as parties compete to inherit his support structure.

Abia Governor Alex Otti enters the race with significant momentum. Analysts cite ongoing infrastructure projects and governance reforms as factors strengthening his re-election prospects.

One analyst summed up the mood in the state, saying: “Otti will be contesting against Otti in the 2027 Abia governorship race.”

Enugu presents a different scenario. While Governor Peter Mbah secured his party’s nomination without opposition, the PDP remains embroiled in a prolonged internal crisis, with rival factions backing different candidates.

A Political Landscape in Flux

Across the country, old alliances have collapsed, former allies have become rivals and defections have altered calculations in multiple states.

Current projections suggest the APC remains well positioned in several northern states, but contests in Kaduna, Kano, Adamawa, Bauchi and Taraba are still considered highly competitive.

With incumbents relying on state structures, opposition parties seeking breakthroughs and political godfathers attempting to maintain relevance, the 2027 governorship elections are shaping up to be one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested political battles in recent history.
