The Osun State Police Command has detained an Accord Party lawmaker, Hon. Abiola Ibrahim Inaolaji, after allegedly discovering 143 suspected electoral mercenaries at his residence in Ikire.

The lawmaker, who represents the Irewole/Isokan State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, was arrested during a police operation on Friday night.

Police said more than 200 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were recovered during the operation.

A video clip showed Ibrahim making a preliminary statement, identifying himself and allegedly admitting that he facilitated the movement of 146 suspects from neighbouring states into Osun State for the purpose of voting in the election.

The development comes as the police intensify security operations ahead of the governorship election, with authorities seeking to prevent activities that could compromise the electoral process.

The police said preliminary findings indicated that the suspects were brought into Osun State from Ondo State to engage in unlawful electoral activities.

During questioning, the suspects reportedly told investigators that they had been recruited by a politician whose identity had not yet been established. They alleged that the politician facilitated the procurement of voters’ cards and directed them to vote in return for financial rewards.

Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway to identify and arrest other suspects allegedly connected to the operation.

According to Ojelabi, the investigation would seek to establish the full scope of the alleged network involved in recruiting electoral mercenaries, voter inducement and other related offences.
