The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced an indefinite strike by public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State over the unresolved abduction of teachers and pupils.

The strike, scheduled to commence on Monday, June 1, 2026, follows growing concerns over the continued detention of the victims and the perceived slow pace of efforts to secure their release.

In a statement signed by Oyo State NUT Chairman Hassan Fatai and Secretary Salami Olukayode, the union said the lingering abduction has heightened anxiety among teachers and created widespread concern within school communities.

The union stated that the incident has affected confidence in the state’s education system, while many parents have become reluctant to send their children to school due to security fears.

According to the NUT, the industrial action is designed to draw the attention of government authorities to the urgency of securing the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted teachers and pupils.

The union directed all public school teachers in the state to observe the strike fully, remain law-abiding and take necessary precautions for their safety throughout the action.

It further expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, assuring them of its continued advocacy and engagement with relevant authorities until the abductees regain their freedom.

The NUT reaffirmed that safeguarding teachers, pupils and the wider school community remains central to its mission and called for stronger measures to improve security in schools.
