A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Chief Agwu Emeaba, has cautioned that the party may face a serious internal crisis following a recent endorsement of a governorship aspirant for the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued in Umuahia on Sunday, Emeaba described the endorsement of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, as “divisive” and potentially harmful to the party’s unity.

He warned that the move could destabilise APC in the state.

“APC is walking into the 2027 cycle with an early but dangerous tension for a possible implosion,” he said.

The endorsement reportedly came after APC stakeholders from Abia’s three senatorial districts adopted Kalu as their preferred governorship candidate at a meeting in Umuahia.

Emeaba said the decision effectively sidelined other aspirants, including Chief Mascot Kalu and Chief Henry Ikoh.

He questioned the basis of the endorsement, arguing that visibility alone should not determine suitability.

“The real question is not whether Benjamin Kalu has become visible nationally, but whether he is the right person to carry a party that is still trying to consolidate itself in Abia,” he said.

He also claimed that key stakeholders were excluded from consultations, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and other aspirants who played roles in building the party.

“Those men he left behind once mentored him and helped build the political ground on which he stands… That kind of political amnesia… weakens it,” he added.

Emeaba urged APC leadership in the state to act quickly to avoid deeper divisions, saying either Mascot Kalu or Henry Ikoh would offer stronger chances of unity and electoral success.

“What Abia APC must not do is to hand its future to a standard bearer that may satisfy a personal ambition today and destroy the party’s prospects tomorrow,” he warned.

In a reaction, Mascot Kalu rejected the endorsement of Benjamin Kalu, insisting it was invalid.

“Let it be stated clearly and without ambiguity: any premeditated consensus arrangement… without the participation of all aspirants… is illegitimate, unacceptable, and null and void, ab initio,” he said.

“Such an imposition will be met with stiff and unequivocal resistance.”
