Belgium’s Amadou Onana

Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during his side’s Round of 16 victory over the United States.

The Belgian Football Federation announced on Tuesday that medical examinations confirmed the Aston Villa star sustained a rupture of the ACL in his right knee after being forced off early in Belgium’s emphatic 4-1 win over the tournament co-hosts in Seattle.

The injury represents a significant blow for Belgium as they prepare for a quarter-final showdown against Spain.

Belgium’s team doctor, Brahim Hacene, expressed disappointment over the midfielder’s diagnosis.

“Unfortunately, the medical examinations have confirmed that Amadou has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. This is devastating news, both for him personally and for the team,” Hacene said.

He revealed that the national team’s medical staff are working closely with Aston Villa to ensure the player receives the best possible care.

“We immediately consulted with Amadou and with Aston Villa to agree on the best approach to his recovery. Over the coming days, we will jointly determine the next steps in his medical treatment and rehabilitation,” he said.

Although Onana’s tournament is over, the federation confirmed he will stay with the Belgium squad in North America until at least after the quarter-finals.

Belgium will take on Spain on Friday in Los Angeles as they continue their bid for World Cup glory without one of their key midfielders.
