Portugal winger Francisco Conceicao has defended Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism of the veteran striker after Portugal’s underwhelming World Cup opener.

The 41-year-old forward has come under scrutiny after Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo, with some critics suggesting Ronaldo’s lack of mobility could be limiting the team’s attacking effectiveness.

Speaking on Sunday, Conceicao rejected claims that players feel compelled to direct play toward Ronaldo.

“We don’t feel the need to pass him the ball,” Conceicao said. “I pass it to whoever I think is in the best position and unmarked.”

He described Ronaldo as “just another member of the squad,” while praising the former captain’s leadership, experience and relentless mentality.

“Cristiano is an example because of his career and the hunger he still possesses at 41 years of age… An example of leadership and the goals he scores,” said the Juventus winger.

“There is no one like him when it comes to scoring goals… He is here to help, just like any other player.”

Portugal will take on Uzbekistan in Houston on Tuesday in their second Group K fixture, hoping to secure their first win of the tournament.

“No one takes it harder than we do. We felt firsthand that we didn’t do our job in the best possible way,” Conceicao said.

“If things don’t go well, there will be more pressure and more criticism. We want to show our quality and win the next match.”
