Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly considering his future amid growing calls within the Labour Party for him to step aside and allow Andy Burnham to assume the party leadership.

Sources within government suggest Starmer could announce plans for his departure as early as today, following weeks of internal pressure and political uncertainty.

A resignation would mark another major change in British politics, making Starmer the latest in a series of seven prime ministers over a ten-year period despite leading Labour to a commanding election victory just two years ago.

The pressure intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly claimed that Starmer would soon leave office.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects – immigration and energy (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!”

Trump offered no evidence to support the claim or explain how he obtained the information.

Starmer’s government has faced criticism over immigration, energy policy and a number of controversial decisions, including changes to winter fuel support and the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledged that political pressure on the prime minister was real but declined to discuss specific plans.

“I don’t want to come on here and be delusional that there is no process, there are no forces at work which are challenging the prime minister as leader – that is clearly the case,” he said.

Kyle added that Starmer remained focused on acting in the national interest and was carefully considering his next steps.

“We are a tight group of people, and we are now facing a period of political uncertainty, and we need to find a way to get through this that puts the country first. This is what we are trying to do,” he said.

While Labour leaders hope to avoid a divisive internal battle, uncertainty remains over whether Burnham would face challengers if a leadership contest is triggered.

Reports indicate that several ministers warned Starmer last week that he should decide on a departure timetable by the end of the weekend or risk a coordinated move to remove him from office.
