Cunha Fires Man United Past Chelsea as Champions League Push Strengthens
Manchester United strengthened their top-five hopes with a 1-0 victory at Chelsea, extending their lead as Cunha scored the only goal of the match.
Manchester United moved closer to a Champions League return after Matheus Cunha’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The win puts United 10 points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea with five games left, significantly boosting their chances of finishing in the Premier League’s top five and qualifying for Europe’s elite competition.
For Chelsea, the defeat deepens their crisis, marking a fourth straight league loss and casting doubt over manager Liam Rosenior’s early reign.
United, under interim boss Michael Carrick, were forced into defensive reshuffling due to injuries and suspensions, starting a makeshift backline featuring three full-backs and teenager Ayden Heaven.
Chelsea struggled again in front of goal, missing injured striker Joao Pedro, while Liam Delap failed to convert his opportunity to lead the attack. Enzo Fernandez, back in the squad after suspension, came close but missed narrowly.
United recovered from a recent 2-1 loss to Leeds with a stronger display and struck just before halftime when Cunha finished a move created by Bruno Fernandes, who recorded his 18th assist of the season.
The hosts improved in the second half, with Delap hitting the post and Noussair Mazraoui almost scoring an own goal under pressure from Wesley Fofana. Moises Caicedo also threatened late on.
Despite the pressure, United held on for a vital win, while Chelsea were met with boos at full-time as their European hopes faded further.
