FIFA Crisis Deepens as Infantino Summons Emergency Meeting Amid Growing Opposition

Gianni Infantino faces mounting pressure after FIFA scrapped its private investment plan, with UEFA considering legal action and governance reforms.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called an emergency meeting of the organisation’s top officials in Rabat, Morocco, as pressure intensifies over the collapse of a controversial private investment proposal and growing opposition from several football governing bodies.

The meeting will bring together FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and members of the management board following the governing body’s decision to abandon plans for FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a company proposed to oversee the commercial and operational management of FIFA competitions.

The project, first reported by The Times and Financial Times, would have included the sale of a 20 per cent stake to private investors.

The proposal faced strong resistance from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, with UEFA reportedly warning it could boycott FIFA tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, if the plan was not withdrawn.

FIFA officially shelved the proposal on Saturday.

Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, later distanced himself from the initiative, saying he had no involvement in the proposal.

“I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity,” Wenger said, describing the decision to abandon the project as “absolutely necessary and beyond question.”

Despite the reversal, Infantino remains under increasing scrutiny.

UEFA has declared it has “lost confidence” in the FIFA president, while the football associations of England and Wales have withdrawn their support. Scotland is also reported to share UEFA’s position.

FIFA Council members are reportedly seeking the 19 votes required to convene a meeting to question Infantino over the FFE proposal and his handling of the Folarin Balogun case.

Should that effort fail, critics are said to be weighing a governance boycott that could hinder FIFA’s ability to operate effectively.

Addressing staff during the crisis, Secretary General Mattias Grafström described recent events as “a sad and reproachable series of events” while assuring employees they would be protected from the ongoing political tensions.

“Individuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go. The institution, its mission and its responsibility towards world football continue,” Grafström stated.

The controversy also follows the resignation of Infantino’s senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro.

Although Infantino continues to enjoy support from several football associations in Africa, South America and Oceania, Asian member associations are expected to play a key role in determining his future.

While Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka and Lebanon have expressed support for the FIFA president, Jordan Football Association President Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein has accused FIFA of attempting to pressure him into backing Infantino by linking his vote to funds allegedly owed to his federation.

FIFA has acknowledged the allegation but has not issued an official response.

UEFA is also actively considering legal action over the abandoned investment proposal and has instructed lawyers to preserve all documents connected to the project.
