Iran Insists US Cannot ‘Dictate’ Terms as Hormuz Strait Proposal Emerges

Tehran pushes back against Washington while proposing to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz during stalled peace talks.

Iran and America

Iran on Tuesday asserted that the United States no longer holds the authority to “dictate” actions to other countries, as American officials consider a new Iranian proposal concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran has effectively shut down the crucial maritime passage since the onset of its war involving the United States and Israel, a move that has rattled global energy markets and placed the strait at the heart of diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

Defence ministry spokesman Reza Talaei-Nik, quoted by state TV, said: “The United States is no longer in a position to dictate its policy to independent nations,” adding that Washington would ultimately “accept that it must abandon its illegal and irrational demands.”

Despite a ceasefire halting direct fighting among Iran, the US, and Israel, negotiations toward a permanent settlement remain stalled.

Reports indicate that the proposal under review in Washington could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — a vital channel for the transport of oil and gas — as part of wider ongoing talks.

Ahead of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation defence ministers’ meeting, Talaei-Nik also stated that Iran stands “ready to share its defensive military capabilities with independent countries, especially the member states” of the SCO.
