Atletico Madrid are aiming to bounce back from recent heartbreak as they prepare to host Arsenal FC in a crucial Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.

Under Diego Simeone, Atletico have experienced a golden era, but one often marked by painful near-misses. Their latest setback came in the Copa del Rey final, where they fell short despite strong fan support in Seville.

That disappointment mirrors past Champions League final defeats to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016, as well as their loss in the 1974 final — leaving Atletico still searching for their first European crown.

They now have an opportunity to move closer to another final against Mikel Arteta’s side, in a match that coincides with the club’s 123rd anniversary.

The team initially faced a cool reception from supporters after returning home, but a 3-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao helped restore some belief.

“The fans don’t need messages (from me), what they need is to win,” Simeone said.

Forward Julián Álvarez echoed the sentiment: “We have to get up from that blow and give everything to get to the final.”

The Metropolitano stadium is expected to be electric, recalling the atmosphere that helped Atletico eliminate FC Barcelona in the previous round.

Simeone highlighted the role of supporters in their journey:
“We’ve built this success through hard work and the support of our fans… we need them now more than ever.”

Known for their intensity and fighting spirit, Atletico continue to embody their motto, “coraje y corazon” — courage and heart.

Their attacking threat has been evident this season, with standout performances including a 4-0 win over Barcelona and a 5-2 triumph against Real Madrid.

Players like Antoine Griezmann, Marcos Llorente, Alexander Sorloth and Giuliano Simeone provide pace and power, while maintaining the relentless work ethic demanded by their coach.

Simeone joked recently: “If you don’t run, you’re coming off tomorrow.”

Griezmann, preparing for a move to Orlando City SC, said:
“It’s good to win again after a negative run… I hope I can gift something incredible to the fans.”

Although Pablo Barrios is sidelined, Alvarez is fit, and Llorente believes both teams have evolved since their previous meeting.

For Atletico, the upcoming clash represents more than just a semi-final — it is a chance to turn years of near-misses into long-awaited European glory.
