The Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Command has intercepted suspected illicit drugs valued at ₦7.8 billion during a major operation in Lagos, while operatives also rejected an alleged ₦500 million bribe offered by a suspect.

The raid, conducted by the Special Protection Unit (SPU) in collaboration with divisional detectives, led to the arrest of multiple suspects, including alleged drug kingpin Eke Henry Ifeanyi.

The operation followed months of surveillance and intelligence gathering coordinated by the Zone 2 Headquarters.

Police operatives stormed an apartment in an estate located in Mende, Maryland, Lagos, where they recovered hundreds of bags of suspected Canadian Loud allegedly hidden inside the residence.

Addressing journalists on Saturday, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 2, Olohundare Jimoh, said the suspect was apprehended on May 19 after weeks of strategic monitoring.

He disclosed that the operation was carried out with support from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, alongside coordinated efforts involving the SPU and divisional police teams.

Jimoh further alleged that the suspect attempted to compromise the operation with a ₦500 million bribe.

“He offered ₦500 million to the SPU commander in an attempt to make the team stand down and allow him to contact his associates to move the consignment elsewhere,” the AIG said.

“The offer was rejected immediately and properly documented for further investigation.”

According to Jimoh, the incident demonstrates the growing professionalism and discipline within the police force under current reforms.

He noted that the success of the operation reflected the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing and cooperation between specialized police formations and local divisional teams.

“The operation demonstrated the effectiveness of rapid containment strategies, intelligence-led policing, and professional conduct among the operatives involved in the raid,” he stated.

Reacting to the seizure, IGP Olatunji Disu commended the officers for their integrity and professionalism.

“Policing must be close to the people, and our specialized units must work side by side with divisional teams on the ground,” Disu said.

“The professionalism shown by the SPU commander in rejecting a ₦500 million bribe and following due procedure is the standard we expect.”

The police said the recovered exhibits would be tendered in court, while investigations remain ongoing to track other members of the suspected drug trafficking syndicate.
