A wave of defections swept through the House of Representatives on Tuesday as 17 lawmakers formally left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing unresolved internal party crises.

The lawmakers, representing multiple states including Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, and Rivers, announced their decisions during plenary, stating that long-standing disputes across all party levels made continued membership untenable.

Yusuf Umar Datti said the ADC’s internal instability had affected his ability to serve his constituents effectively.

Harris Okonkwo said his exit followed consultations with political stakeholders and constituents before joining the NDC.

Other defectors include Sani Adamu, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Obiageli, OluwaSeyi Sowunmi, Peter Anekwe, Zakari Umar Mukhtari, George Olawande, Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, Umezuruike Manuchim, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Kamilu Ado.

Separately, Leke Abejide announced his defection from the ADC to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Some lawmakers raised concerns over the growing trend of defections ahead of the 2027 elections, attributing it to persistent party instability.

The Speaker formally acknowledged the letters and wished the defecting members success in their new political parties.

The mass movement is expected to significantly alter the balance of power in the House, particularly weakening the ADC’s position among minority blocs.
