A traditional ruler from Bende Local Government Area of Abia State has attracted criticism over a viral video in which he was alleged to have commented on voters who may choose not to support Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, during the 2027 general election.

The monarch’s identity was not disclosed.

Reacting to the development, Peter Ekekwe, an indigene of Bende, said the alleged remarks were inappropriate and warned against what he described as the increasing involvement of traditional institutions in partisan political activities.

In a statement issued on Friday in Umuahia, Ekekwe stressed that every Nigerian has a constitutional right to freely choose preferred candidates at the ballot box without intimidation or external pressure.

“A healthy democracy relies entirely on the freedom of citizens to think, choose and associate without fear. Every Nigerian who has attained the legal voting age is mature enough to make an independent political decision guided by conscience, conviction and the truth,” he said.

He insisted that no traditional ruler or political leader should seek to dictate or influence the voting decisions of citizens.

Ekekwe further noted that traditional institutions are meant to foster unity rather than political division.

“Our traditional rulers occupy sacred stools because they are expected to unite their people irrespective of political affiliation. The palace should never become a campaign office. The throne belongs to every son and daughter of the community, not to any political party or candidate,” he said.

He added that public office should be attained through integrity, service and the confidence of the electorate, not through coercion.

Ekekwe called on political stakeholders to embrace peaceful campaigns and respect the democratic rights of voters. He also urged traditional rulers nationwide to remain impartial and continue to provide leadership to all members of their communities, irrespective of their political affiliations.
