Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is seeking answers over an unexpected payment made into his personal bank account, amid concerns that the transaction could be used to create an association between him and unknown individuals or activities.

The payment reportedly came with the description “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” a description that has heightened concerns because Atiku and his political organisation reportedly neither requested nor authorised the funds.

His spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, disclosed the development and distanced Atiku from the transaction.

“Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” Shaibu said in a statement.

Why the Payment Is Raising Concern

The central concern, according to findings by Saturday Vanguard, is not simply the unexpected arrival of the money but the possibility that the transaction could establish a financial link between Atiku and people or activities unknown to him.

Unexplained funds can potentially trigger questions about the source of the money and its intended purpose. In some circumstances, such transactions could expose a recipient to scrutiny over alleged connections to terrorism financing, drug trafficking, fraud or other criminal activities.

There is, however, no evidence presently available to Saturday Vanguard that the funds originated from a terrorist, drug trafficking or other criminal organisation.

Rather, the concern within Atiku’s camp is that an unexplained transaction could later be interpreted or presented as evidence of an association that does not exist.

How Was His Private Account Obtained?

The circumstances surrounding the sender’s access to Atiku’s banking details have also become a major issue.

Shaibu said the account used for the transaction was strictly personal and its details were not publicly available.

“The account is a strictly private one whose details are not in the public domain. This raises a fundamental question: How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?” the statement said.

This has led to questions about whether sensitive account information could have been improperly disclosed by someone with privileged access.

While such information would ordinarily be available to the bank and relevant financial regulatory institutions for legitimate statutory purposes, Atiku’s camp is questioning how an unknown person obtained the details.

“Even more disturbing is the suspicion that such confidential information may have been obtained through persons with privileged access,” the statement said.

Bank Investigates Transaction

The bank involved, identified as one of Nigeria’s top five banks, has reportedly begun investigating the payment.

According to Saturday Vanguard, the bank was expected to provide Atiku with its findings at the weekend as it worked to determine how the transaction was processed and whether available records could reveal its origin.

Further checks showed that the funds were transferred from an OPay account.

That information could assist efforts to identify the immediate source of the transfer. However, Atiku’s camp remains concerned that the account from which the money was sent may not necessarily belong to the person who ultimately initiated or was responsible for the payment.

Atiku Warns of Financial Privacy Threat

The former Vice President has also framed the incident as a wider issue of financial privacy and national security.

He argued that if sensitive banking information belonging to prominent Nigerians can be accessed and used without authorisation, ordinary citizens could also be vulnerable.

“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” the statement quoted him as saying.

Atiku further warned that unauthorised access to such information could expose account holders to serious security risks.

“If established, this would amount to a grave abuse of power capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements,” the statement added.

Questions Remain Unanswered

For Atiku and his camp, the unexplained deposit raises several unanswered questions.

Who authorised the payment? Why was it described as an electioneering campaign contribution? How did the sender obtain details of a private account? And was the transaction intended to achieve a particular political or other objective?

The questions are particularly significant because Atiku remains a major opposition political figure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His spokesman said the matter has already been brought to the attention of security agencies and the Nigerian public.

Atiku’s camp believes the incident should be fully investigated, particularly the source of the money and the circumstances through which the sender obtained details of his private bank account.

Until the investigation establishes the facts, the payment remains an unexplained transaction that Atiku’s camp considers a potential political and security concern rather than a legitimate campaign contribution.
