The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says the exit of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presents a challenge, but the party remains committed to its 2027 electoral strategy.

Speaking during an appearance on Prime Time, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi admitted the move was disappointing.

“Is it a setback? The answer is yes. Is it a fatal blow? The answer is no, because the objectives are very clear. They are still the same,” he said.

Obi and Kwankwaso had earlier teamed up with the ADC in a bid to form a united opposition front before later defecting to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Although Abdullahi said he was unhappy with their decision, he noted the exits could help the party sharpen its focus.

“Personally, I’m not happy they left. And I cannot tell you why, because I have my own sentiments. I’m not happy they left,” he stated.

He added: “In a way, it’s a bit of relief. Now we can focus on really doing what we need to do without being under the pressure cooker that they were trying to put us in.”

Abdullahi stressed that the ADC does not see Obi and Kwankwaso as adversaries.

“We don’t think they are our enemies. We are not going to go into a dogfight with them,” he said.

Explaining his departure, Obi alleged that internal disputes and litigation were being weaponised to frustrate his ambitions, warning that weakening opposition parties could undermine democratic balance in Nigeria.
