Pope Leo XIV Takes Firm Tone as Trump Row Escalates in First Year of Papacy
Vatican–US tensions escalate as Pope Leo XIV condemns Trump’s foreign policy remarks.
The first year of Pope Leo XIV has seen a notable shift from cautious diplomacy to open disagreement with US President Donald Trump, marking a rare public confrontation between the Vatican and Washington.
Born Robert Francis Prevost and previously a missionary in Peru, Leo XIV initially projected a calm and reserved leadership style, focusing on poverty, social inequality, and the ethical risks of artificial intelligence, while allowing senior church figures to handle more controversial matters.
Early in his papacy, US bishops took the lead in criticising Trump administration policies, especially immigration restrictions, calling them “inhumane” in a November statement.
The Vatican’s early approach prioritised dialogue, but tensions increased as Leo warned against what he described as a growing “diplomacy based on force.”
In January, he declared that “war is back in vogue,” and later condemned Trump’s remarks on Iran as “truly unacceptable,” urging citizens to push leaders toward peace.
Trump hit back, describing the pope as “weak” on crime and “terrible” in foreign policy, triggering backlash from religious and political observers.
Georgetown University’s Christopher White said the pope’s stronger tone reflected concern over religious language being used to justify conflict.
Leo XIV has insisted he is “not afraid” of political pressure but has framed his statements in spiritual terms rather than political opposition. Responding to Trump’s latest comments, he said:
“The Church’s mission is to preach the Gospel and to preach peace.”
“The Church has spoken out against all nuclear weapons for years, so there is no doubt about that.”
He also emphasised that criticism should be fair and truthful.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet the pope on Thursday in what some observers see as a possible diplomatic opening.
Despite tensions, the 70-year-old pontiff is expected to continue an active early papacy, including upcoming visits across Italy such as Pompeii and Naples.
