City Boys Movement - Empowerment crisis imo

An empowerment initiative organised by the City Boys Movement in the South-East descended into disorder after participants rushed to collect items meant for beneficiaries.

The programme held at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, Imo State, witnessed chaotic scenes as hundreds of attendees surged forward to grab equipment including sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers and laptops.

Security operatives present at the venue were unable to prevent the crowd from breaking through barriers as people struggled to reach the items.

The incident happened just as the National Leader of the movement, Seyi Tinubu, was about to commence the official distribution of the empowerment materials.

Call for partnership with Tinubu government

Earlier in his remarks, the movement’s Imo State director, Pascal Ikechukwu, said the group had chosen to work with the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the Igbo region benefits more from national politics.

He told the audience:

“What we have shown you today is abundant love, and we expect that in return. Ndigbo, we are people defeated in war. It is not easy for us. We are just seeking a fair share.”

He emphasised that cooperation rather than confrontation would be the strategy moving forward.

“We have decided to partner with the government at the centre. We are not ready to fight. We have tried fighting, and it didn’t work for us.”

Ikechukwu further said:

“We have shown you love, Seyi Tinubu, and I know you will reciprocate in a dozen-fold.”

He also reflected on his political choice during the last election.

“At the last election, I didn’t support Asiwaju; I had to be an Igbo boy. Politics is a game, and it’s a game you love to win. We don’t want to lose again.”
