Switzerland have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless Round of 16 clash in Vancouver.

The contest, the final knockout fixture outside the United States, remained scoreless after 120 minutes as two evenly matched teams cancelled each other out with disciplined defensive displays.

The penalty shootout ultimately settled the encounter, with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel producing the decisive moment by saving Cucho Hernandez’s penalty before Ruben Vargas converted the winning spot-kick to seal Switzerland’s progress.

Colombia began brightly, forcing Kobel into a spectacular save in the 21st minute to keep out Gustavo Puerta’s curling effort from the edge of the area.

Switzerland soon responded through Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye, but Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas was equal to both attempts to ensure the teams remained level at the interval.

Although Switzerland enjoyed more possession after the restart, Colombia continued to pose a threat, with Luis Suarez missing one of their better chances. Neither side, however, could find the quality needed to break the deadlock during normal time.

Extra time produced the game’s best opportunities. Jhon Lucumi struck the crossbar with a header for Colombia before Kobel denied Jaminton Campaz with a fine save.

At the opposite end, Vargas reacted brilliantly to stop substitute Zeki Amdouni, while Campaz later squandered a clear opportunity to send Colombia into the quarter-finals.

With no winner after two hours of football, the match went to penalties, where Switzerland held their composure to emerge 4-3 winners.

Kobel’s save from Hernandez proved decisive before Vargas confidently slotted home the winning penalty, sparking celebrations among the Swiss players and supporters.

Switzerland will now take on Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Kansas City after the defending champions staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure their place in the last eight.

The victory also sees Switzerland reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the 1954 tournament, which they hosted.
