2027 Presidency: Afenifere Backs Tinubu for Second Term

AKURE — Afenifere has declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, with the pan-Yoruba organisation pointing to restructuring, economic prosperity, inclusivity and security as key considerations.

The decision was reached at a caucus meeting held at the Akure residence of Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, and was communicated through a statement signed by the organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi.

Afenifere said its decision followed an assessment of the Tinubu administration and the political developments in the country.

The organisation said it believed the administration was committed to restructuring Nigeria, promoting economic prosperity and inclusivity, strengthening democracy and tackling insecurity.

It said the policies of the administration could “restore hope in Nigeria and make the country one that every citizen would be proud of.”

Following the resolution, Afenifere called on Nigerians to support Tinubu’s re-election, listing the endorsement among its major political decisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The organisation said restructuring remained a major consideration in its decision, reflecting its renewed emphasis on the issue.

On the security situation, Afenifere expressed concern over alleged plans by bandits and terrorists to disrupt the 2027 elections, following revelations attributed to the DSS.

“We charge the Federal Government and all security agencies to decisively eliminate these threats to guarantee a peaceful voting environment,” the group said.

Afenifere also appealed to political parties and other stakeholders to ensure that the election period remained peaceful and free from violence, thuggery and character assassination.

The organisation condemned the reported attack on a military base along the Igbeti-Igboho road in Oyo State and other attacks reported in the Middle Belt and North-East.

It called for security agencies to conduct immediate sweeps of affected areas to locate and dislodge criminal elements allegedly using forests and border communities as operational bases.

The group further called for investigations into alleged individuals collaborating with bandits and those sponsoring illegal mining activities, particularly in communities reportedly affected by displacement.

“Searchlight should be beamed on alleged collaborators of bandits. Sponsors of illegal mining should also be profiled,” it said.

Afenifere also urged the Federal Government to provide support to states that have enacted anti-open grazing laws to enable them enforce the legislation and address farmer-herder clashes.

It listed parts of Kwara, Ondo, Osun and Ogun states, as well as Ibarapa, Egbeda and Oke-Ogun in Oyo State, among areas where such clashes remained a concern.

Beyond politics and security, Afenifere reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting the Yoruba language.

The organisation announced plans to establish a Yoruba Language Renaissance Trust Fund aimed at strengthening the use of the language in verbal and literary communication.

The meeting was chaired by Oba Olu Falae, Chairman of Afenifere’s Executive Committee, with representatives from Lagos, Ekiti, Oyo, Ogun, Kwara, Kogi, Osun and Ondo states in attendance.

Among those present were former Afenifere Secretary-General Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, former Ondo State Governor Dr Olusegun Mimiko, and former Osun State Deputy Governor Senator Iyiola Omisore.
