2027 Presidency: Wike Sets Resignation Deadline if Tinubu Loses FCT, Rivers

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that he will quit his ministerial position if President Bola Tinubu fails to win the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.

Wike made the statement in Abuja during an engagement with members of the Apo Traders Association, where he linked his political responsibility in the FCT to support for Tinubu ahead of the election.

According to the former Rivers governor, the President enjoys support beyond the All Progressives Congress (APC), with some PDP members also backing his administration.

“I’ll tell you one thing about this place. We are doing rainbow coalition. Even people in the PDP, we are supporting Tinubu, right?” Wike said.

He explained that his position as FCT Minister made the territory his place of work, while Rivers State remained his home state.

“You see, FCT is where I work. Rivers State is my state, right? And if I cannot deliver where I work, then I am not worthy to be here,” he said.

Wike further argued that a loss for Tinubu in either of the two areas would call into question his performance as minister.

“It means that whatever I am doing here, people don’t think that I’m doing the right thing. And even if I was here, I shouldn’t be in that position,” he said.

He therefore pledged to accept personal responsibility for the result, saying he would resign immediately after the presidential election if Tinubu loses both the FCT and Rivers.

“I’m a practical person. The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike added.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are currently scheduled for January 16, 2027.
