2027 Tensions Rock PDP as Camps Clash Over Tinubu’s Re-Election

Tensions rise within the PDP as factions led by Turaki and Wike disagree over backing Tinubu in 2027, despite ongoing reconciliation efforts.

Internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have intensified ahead of its national convention, with rival factions sharply divided over whether to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

At the centre of the dispute is the stance of the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led bloc, which has firmly rejected any endorsement of Tinubu, who is expected to seek re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In contrast, a faction aligned with Nyesom Wike has expressed support for the president, deepening divisions within the party.

The disagreement comes as reconciliation talks gather pace ahead of the March 29 convention in Abuja, widely seen as crucial to the PDP’s survival and 2027 prospects.

Articulating the Turaki camp’s position, PDP spokesman Ini Ememobong rejected the idea of backing a rival party.

“It is improper, unjust, and fundamentally unfair for an opposition party like the PDP to endorse the presidential candidate of another party. Absolutely no. It will never be so,” he said.

He revealed that negotiations could result in the withdrawal of court cases if consensus is reached.

“Yes, once agreeable terms are reached… all court cases… will be withdrawn and converted into a consent judgement.”

Ememobong also warned that weakening the PDP could undermine Nigeria’s democratic balance.

“In a pluralistic society like Nigeria, a one-party state… is not healthy for democracy,” he said.

Despite the divisions, the Wike-aligned leadership insists the party will produce its own presidential candidate, with plans already underway for primaries following the convention.

“There will be another convention… all presidential aspirants will come forward,” a senior member disclosed.

Party elders, including Olabode George and Bukola Saraki, have called for unity, stressing that reconciliation remains non-negotiable.

“Sometimes life is not a straight line… it takes time,” George said, cautioning against personal ambition.

Saraki echoed the sentiment, saying: “PDP must provide a platform for people to contest elections.”
