A leadership question has emerged within the Abia chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu both say they have been mandated by Bola Tinubu to take charge of the party in the state.

Benjamin Kalu, in a statement, explained that the arrangement aligns with the president’s model where governors oversee party affairs in their states, while in Abia—currently led by Alex Otti of the Labour Party—the responsibility falls on the highest-ranking APC officeholder.

“Thanks… for insisting that governors should handle the issues of the party in the states… while the highest ranking political office holders like the Deputy Speaker takes care of the affairs in Abia State,” he said.

He also praised the National Working Committee and expressed optimism about the party’s electoral prospects, stating: “We will continue to work with every stakeholder until victory is assured… We will deliver Abia votes overwhelmingly.”

Meanwhile, Orji Kalu, representing Abia North, also declared that he had been tasked with coordinating party activities in the state.

“I sincerely thank… President Bola Ahmed Tinubu… for the confidence reposed in me, and the marching order to coordinate activities in Abia State,” he said.

He pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to build unity within the party and position it for success in future elections.

The dual claims underscore ongoing political realignments within the Abia APC as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 polls.
